Social Services

The Department of Health (DOH) supplies information and education about the dangers of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. DOH offers primary prevention such as seminars and trainings, secondary prevention for those just starting to use, and tertiary prevention—help for habitual users.

The Department of Mental Health (DMH) offers prevention, treatment, and crisis services for students. DMH also offers therapy and treatment at three special education centers for children who experience behavioral, emotional, and academic problems in a regular school setting.

The Summer Youth Employment Program is a five-week temporary work experience and job readiness program for District youth ages 14-21. Youth earn $5.15 per hour, working between 20 and 30 hours a week. For more information, call the Department of Employment Services at (202) 698-3991.
